Introducing Season 4
Just & Joyful Transitions

What is a just and joyful transition?
The concept of a just transition first emerged through the struggle of worker union movements in North America's energy sector during the 1970s and 80s. Since then, it has become a powerful and widely adopted framework for imagining and guiding the shift toward socially just, climate resilient and environmentally sustainable futures.
Yet in recent years, unsustainable ‘solutions’ for a just transition have negatively impacted vulnerable communities across the world, creating ‘eco-sacrifice zones’ – areas sacrificed for ‘greener living’ and ‘net zero’ plans elsewhere. This directly opposes the core values and principles of a truly just and equitable process of transformation.

“These so-called solutions speak of change but not transformation. We don’t need greener ways of the status quo, we need a whole new status quo.
At its heart, a just transition reminds us that climate action must centre justice and inclusion. It highlights the vital role of community well-being, participatory governance, and collective care in building resilient and thriving societies.”
– Marion Atieno Osieoyo

Our new season, Just and Joyful Transitions offers a space for us to imagine and explore what a just transition might look like when we centre Mother Earth and life-giving solutions by black women Earth keepers.
